D) Il verbo essere / the verb to be

English “you are“ can mean in Italian:

tu sei * (informal, familiar) We use “tu“ when we are talking to one person who is a member of our family, a friend, a colleague, a child. In other words, to a person we know well and with whom we are on familiar terms.

Lei è** (formal): We use “Lei“ when we are talking to one person who we do not know well, who is our boss or to anyone with whom we are not on familiar terms. It can be a man or a woman.

voi siete*** We use “voi“ when we are talking to two or more people. So, when talking to one person in Italian, you can choose between “dare del tu" e “dare del Lei". If an Italian tells you “Diamoci del tu" (in English “Let´s call eacht other tu") he / she suggests using informal, friendly, familiar form of address. When using this form of address speakers use verbs in the 2nd person singular. The other form of addressing is called “darsi del Lei" (in English to call each other “Lei") which means that people use formal, more distant form of address. They use 3rd person singular form of verbs + pronoun Lei (pronoun does not have to be used).

Non-native speakers should always use “Lei" as a form of addressing other people and they should wait for Italian native speakers to say “Diamoci del tu".

So, if we want to ask one person “How are you?" we have two options: Come stai? if we are using familiar form of address or Come sta? if we are using formal form of address
